Origins (1878) The original building was constructed in 1878 by the brothers Ángel and Pascual Roverano. Mysterious Buenos Aires It was a two-story building: the ground floor housed offices (many of which belonged to notaries and lawyers, due to its proximity to the Cabildo, where the courts were located), and the upper floors contained residential units. arquitectos-franceses-argentina.blogspot.com Opening of Avenida de Mayo and Renovation (1912–1918) With the opening of Avenida de Mayo (a major urban planning project in Buenos Aires), the original building lost part of its facade In 1912, a renovation led by architect Eugenio Gantner began. The work lasted six years, and the “new” gallery (as we know it today) was inaugurated in 1918. Mysterious Buenos Aires Three basement levels were added, and the building was raised to eight stories of office space. Luxury materials imported from Europe were used: bronze window frames, marble, fine woods, floral stained-glass windows, etc. The lobby features exquisite details: for example, doorknobs bearing the letter “R” (for Roverano), onyx staircases, columns, and stained-glass windows. Connection to the Subway Pasaje Roverano has a direct connection to the Perú station on Subway Line A. This underground access is quite unique among the arcades of Buenos Aires. According to official records, this connection was authorized around 1915. Historical and Social Use Law firms, accounting firms, and businesses have operated on its floors (it is a mixed-use building). One of the most traditional businesses was a hair salon and barbershop owned by the Romano family. It is said that Pope Francis, when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, used to go to that hair salon to get his hair cut. It is also a place steeped in cultural history: for example, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry worked at the National Airline, which had offices on the second floor of the building, and he used to enter through that entrance. Architectural Style The building and the gallery have an eclectic character, combining academic elements with influences from the Viennese Secession. Its stained-glass windows, curved glass panels, columns, and woodwork stand out. The bronze and marble details and ornamentation are very well preserved and contribute to its heritage value. Heritage Recognition It is documented in tourism and heritage publications as part of Buenos Aires’ Historic District. The building has undergone restorations to preserve its original facade and details. With Coldwell Banker Grupo Elite, you’re one step closer to your dream home.
